SE-800 Digital Video Switcher SE-800 Digital Video Switcher

alt alt alt

The SE-800 digital switcher comes standard with analog inputs. The SE-800 model includes a DV inputs and an output plus an SDI overlay channel for use with a character generator that uses a down stream keyer (DSK). Using the SDI overlay allows the character generator to appear on all of the SE-800 outputs.

The SE-800 also includes an internal audio mixer with both mic and line level audio inputs. (A built-in audio delay will insure correct lipsynch with the compressed DV format works on all formats) The SE-800 includes input TBC and a format converter, so each input source may be seen with a composite video monitor.

The SE-800 is supported with a family of accessories including monitor holders, shipping cases and mobile studios as well as compatible products, such as intercoms, character generators, and more. In order to simplify the decision about what to buy, we have prepared several “kits” that include the switcher and monitors.

A: Please download this PDF for all necessary instructions - PDF link.

Q: Can the SE-800 be controlled remotely with anything other than the RMC-90?
A: Yes, the RS-232 protocol is available on the SE-800 page.

Q: Can you mix between DV sources and Analog sources?
A: Yes, the SE-800 can actively switch between any of the four input sources.

Q: What is the advantage of the Datavideo TLM-404 Four LCD display over the others?

  1. Combined with the custom holder, the Datavideo TLM-404 is less expensive than others and uses LCD panels with similar specifications.
  2. The controls on the Datavideo TLM-404 are recessed to prevent being broken off.
  3. TLM-404s have on/off switches on the front.

Q: What are the frame rates of the SE-800 dissolve speeds?

  • Speed 1 = 84 Frames
  • Speed 2 = 45 Frames
  • Speed 3 = 32 Frames
  • Speed 4 = 26 Frames
  • Speed 5 = 18 Frames
  • Speed 6 = 11 Frames
  • Speed 7 = 6 Frames
  • Speed 8 = 5 Frames
  • Speed 9 = 4 Frames

Q: Is there a charge for firmware updates?
A: No.

Q: What are the sizes of the Picture-in-Picture windows?
A: The small PIP window has a width of 185 pixels and a height of 147 pixels. The large PIP window has a width of 284 pixels and a height of 207 pixels.

Q: Does the SE-800 pass time code?
A: No.

Q: What is the final image height in pixels if we mix an analog image (486px) with a DV image (480px)?
A: The final image resolution will be 480px in height.

Q: I am using DV cameras for a video feed and I am using an external audio mixing board. How do I get the audio and video to synchronize?
A: To use sound from an external audio mixer, you must connect the mixer to one of the four source audio input channels on the SE-800. You will then need to disable the DV audio stream from the SE-800. Do not use the AUX input for audio that you want to synchronize to video.

altUsing on external mixer
Separate the DV audio from the DV video so you can use an external audio mixer. Connect the mixer input to channel A, B, C or D, but not to aux inputs.

  1. Press the INPUT FORMAT button. To select channel A, B, C or D
alt
  1. On the EFFECTS number pad (shown left), type "01" and then press the "ENT" key.
  2. Press the "SPD" key to toggle "N" and "Y" ("Y" enables the DV audio on each DV input "N" disables the DV audio on the DV input and enables the analog line inputs.)
  3. Press the INPUT FORMAT button to exit and save your current selection. NOTE: Do NOT connect to the AUX input, connect to channels A, B, C, or D only or your audio and video will not be in sync.)

Q: How do I set up the audio on the SE-800 so it does not change with the different video sources?
A: This is what happens if the A/V button is not enabled. (If the A/V button is not enabled then the audio source does not change when video channels are changed.) If a single audio input from a sound board is used as an audio source, then a fade in/out of video would not affect the audio. In other words, the audio would stay active and not fade.

If you turn on the A/V button and fade from "A" (audio is present) to a channel that does not have audio, you will get a slow fade in the audio. It does not matter if you fade to a color or fade to video, the audio will fade out.

Q: Does the SE-800 do "Next Source Preview"?
A: No, however we do have an SE-800 accessory for this, please take a look at our RMC-140 Preview/Tally box.

Q: I have connected my camera to the SE-800 but I am unable to see the video on my monitors.
A: Check to make sure the the "input format" button is set to the correct input type.

altFor example:
If your camera is connected via firewire on "Input A", press the upper input format button once to activate source "A", then press the lower video format button to select the source type.

The source types on an SE-800 DV are as follows: V (Composite video), S (Y/C video), YUV (Component video), and DV (Firewire)

The source types on an SE-800 AV are as follows: V (Composite video), S (Y/C video), and YUV (Component video)

Q: When I power on my SE-800 I am seeing "snow" on the video outputs.

altIf the "Chroma Key EXT" button is activated (shown left) before powering off unit, upon powering the unit up again you will get a pixelated snow effect (shown below left) from only the main outputs.

Note: This will not affect the monitor outputs on the input cards.
altIf the Chroma Key EXT button is selected during operation (without an external key source connected), you will see the last frame or a freeze frame of the main sources input channel.

Q: I have adjusted the voice sync button but it appears to have no effect on the sound.
A: Please check to make sure that your audio source is not connected to the AUX input. The voice sync button does not delay the AUX audio input.

Q: AUX 1 and 2 is working but the line inputs (ABCD) are not passing audio through the switcher?
A: Please check to make sure that the "Master" and "Video" buttons are activated on the audio sliders on the SE-800. The red indicator must be on in order to allow audio through the line inputs of the switcher.

Q: I am not getting a signal from one of my firewire inputs, is there a way to reset the channel?

alt
  1. Press the upper input format button once to activate source "A".
  2. Go to the "Sub Source Button" section on your SE-800.
  3. Press and hold the Sub Source Button for "A" for about 3 seconds until the LED on the button flashes, then release it.
  4. Repeat step 3 on the remaining channels.
  5. Press the upper input format button until all of the LED's on input format are off.
  6. Power off your switcher and remove the power cord for 30 seconds.
  7. Reconnect the power cord and power on your switcher. NOTE: If the channel does not reset, please contact us via our support form.

Q: How do I activate the external key input with a single button?

  1. Press Input format button 5 times until all of the LEDS are on (A-B-C-D).
  2. A flashing "P" will appear on the LED readout.
  3. Enter "02" on the number pad then press the enter key "ENT".
  4. Press "SPD" (Speed) to change the flashing "Y" (looks like a backwards Y) to an "n", and then press "ENT".
  5. Press Input Format button to exit the Program mode.

The mixers external Key button will now function as a on or off toggle, however, the internal key will be disabled.

Q: Why is there a loss of signal when I connect a Sony BRC-300 to the SE-800DV?
A: The DV signal from the Sony BRC-300 camera does not send audio within the DV stream, so the SE-800's DV inputs are unable to lock to the signal. Datavideo has a special firmware version to resolve this issue. Please contact Datavideo Technical Support if you have or intend to purchase BRC-300 cameras. If you inform Datavideo in advance, we can update the firmware before shipping the product to your reseller.

Q: Does the SE-800 work in 16:9?
A: No.

Q: Is the carrying case suitable for use as a shipping case?
A: No.

Q: Is there a DV delay?
A: Yes. If the output is shown behind or next to the subject (i.e. a speaker at a convention), there will be a noticeable delay of about 1/6 of a second. There is less of a delay with S-Video cameras. One workaround is to use a camera to feed a signal straight into your projector or screen, and that same camera can still be used as a source for the switcher. You will need a DV repeater, such as our VP-332, and optionally a format converter to convert the DV into whatever format your projector requires, such as our DAC-15.

Q: How do you address DV audio delay?
A: DV audio delay, like chroma, is set for each of the assigned inputs. If you change the assignment of the input from DV to S-Video, you may want to reset the audio delay. There is a no-charge firmware update for early SE-800DV purchasers.

Q: Can I connect the SE-800's DV output to a computer?
A: Yes, a PC or Mac will recognize the DV signal from the SE-800 as a "Philips DV Device". The signal can also be captured by any editing software.

Q: Does the SE-800 accept HD?
A: No, it only records standard definition.

Q: Does the SE-800DV have SDI output and firewire 400 output?
A: The SE-800DV has a single SDI output and a firewire 400 output. The SE-800AV does not include the SDI output or the firewire output.

Q: What is the recommended length of the firewire cable I can use?
A: We have 20 and 10 meter DV cables, which can be purchased for use with the SE-800DV. You can also use our VP-314 to interconnect the DV cables to achieve a distance of 300ft.

Q: What is the use of the SDI Overlay input and output?
A: The SDI Overlay input and output is only for our character generator connection.

Q: Can I input the SE-800DV from one or more playback sources and expect the SE-800DV to frame synchronize them?
A: Yes, the SE-800DV will frame synchronize all of the incoming sources.

Q:  Will the SE-800DV take a non-genlock signal from multiple cameras and frame synchronize them?
A: Yes, as long as the signal format is NTSC.

Q: Does the SE-800 have a built-in RGB and/or color correction to any extent?
A: SE-800 has a built-in color processor, which has adjustments for each input channel.

Q: Can we connect our computer to the SE-800DV via S-Video output from our computer?
A: Yes, you can.

Q: We want to create an animated lower third over the video. Can the SE-800DV do that?
A: Yes, the SE-800DV does have the ability of create lower third over the video with our CG-100 software. We recommend the CG-100 software with a Blackmagic Design Decklink SDI card to use with the SE-800DV.

Q: Is there a Chromakey feature on the SE-800?
A: Yes. There is a Chromakey feature on the SE-800, but we recommend that you look at our SE-900 switcher for an excellent Chromakey feature that allows you to cut between two different input sources and two different background sources.

Q:  Will closed captioning signals be maintained through the SE-800 switcher?
A:  No,  closed captioning is not supported.
